Help keep Ice Hockey alive in Canberra and get a team into the AIHL in 2014. #maintaintherage
The Australian Ice Hockey League is Tiny. There are eight teams. Or there were. The players don’t get paid. The teams barely manage to cover their travel costs, but they continue for love of the sport.
Two days ago, the Owner of the Canberra Knights, John Raut, threw in the towel. Player depth and finances were the reasons that he gave. The team is one of the oldest teams in the league. He did this with pretty much no warning or consultation with the players.
Anyway, the players weren’t happy about this. And they got together. They really want to play. They reckon they can keep the team alive and the league agreed that if they can satisfy three key criteria, the Knights can continue.
- To field a competitive team
- To have an agreement to play and train at a rink.
- To be financially viable.
Now it’s this last thing that’s really key. Because Raut had time to organise sponsorships, etc., and the Players have until 8pm on Monday night, AEDT. Approximately 3 days from now.
So please, if you love hockey and underdogs and want to see the most unlikely team with the biggest hearts able to continue, then consider donating. They’ve got the most passionate supporters in the league. Every single little bit makes a difference.
